In Komodo, it’s easy to get caught up in the hunt for your most desired critters. The reefs are teeming with life from large pelagics like reef mantas to the tiniest of tiny creatures like pygmy seahorses, and everyone who comes to dive Komodo typically has a bucket list of things to see.
While there is no better place to come and tick some well-deserved boxes, I would strongly recommend devoting some time to just enjoy the stunning reefscapes. Komodo is one of the few places in the world where reefs are still in a hyper-healthy state and can extend beyond your visual range in every direction. Sea fans spread over two meters in diameter while every inch of the sandy substrate is covered with a painters pallet of the colourful reef.
As a photographer, I understand how easy it is to become so focused on your search that you block everything out, but I think it’s good we all remind ourselves to just take a few moments and absorb the visual phenomenon of Komodo’s underwater world.
